Zanzibar mulls ban on public smoking

 
The government of Zanzibar has told the House of Representatives here it plans to amend the Social Health Act, 1936 to include a section that will bar people from smoking in public.
This was said by Minister for Health Juma Duni Haji, when responding to a question by Chakechake constituency representative Omar Ali Shehe, who had wanted to know what measures the government would take to fight against public smoking.
Duni said there were big health risks caused by smoking including developing tuberculosis (TB) and the government had been working on a bill to prohibit smoking in the public.
“Honourable Speaker, the government through the ministry has been doing a lot to educate the public about the dangers of smoking,” he said.
Either, he said his ministry would continue advising the Ministry of Finance to impose bigger taxes on all types of cigarettes to control smoking behaviour.
Tabia Njema Cigarette Company has stopped production for a long time after foreign investors failed to develop it.
