Zanzibar govt acts on land grabbers

From DAILY NEWS Reporter, Zanzibar,

ZANZIBAR Second Vice-President, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi on Tuesday announced revocation of lease on six plots on open spaces wrongly offered to different developers.

"I order for revocation of lease for land on six plots at Mazizini area.

"There should be no exception in the implementation of the law and the poor should not be suppressed," Ambassador Iddi said after a tour of the municipality.

The VP learnt that open spaces had been grabbed by several developers contrary to the Master Plan.

He asked officials in the land department to remain firm in observing the law, emphasizing that: "Nobody is above the law."

Occupation of plots earmarked as open spaces in various parts of Unguja have provoked widespread complaints by several people in the municipality who blame the government for laxity.

There are also speculations that people holding ill-gotten permits including some big shots might continue developing the plots.
