ZANZIBAR plans to establish its own grain reserves in a move designed to improve food security in the Isles.
The Zanzibar House of Representatives (Reps) is scheduled to start its session on March 23 and the Bill for Food and Nutrition Act will be introduced.
The proposed law which aims at improving food security in the islands, would replace the 'National Food Programme No. 3 of 1988' known in Kiswahili as 'Mpango wa Taifa wa Kujitosheleza kwa Chakula' (MTAKULA).
Zanzibar had for long been striving to make food readily available to the people at affordable prices.
The Isles, however, heavily depend on imports for major types of food including rice and wheat.
Zanzibar legislators, according to a programme made available to the 'Daily News' here on Monday, would also deliberate on the proposed law for students' loans board.
The board will be responsible for loans to students in institutions of higher learning in Zanzibar.
The loans board will replace the current Zanzibar Higher Learning Students Fund Act No. 6 of 2001.
Other bills to be moved in the House include the Child Rights and Care Act and Movable Assets Act.
