From ISSA YUSSUF in Zanzibar,
ZANZIBAR plans to improve all roads leading to the historic Stone Town to ease a myriad of problems, mainly traffic congestion and accidents, thanks to the World Bank, which has released about 1.3 million US dollars loan (about 2bn/-) for the feasibility study on the work.
The Zanzibar Minister for Infrastructure and Communications, Mr Hamad Masoud Hamad, said at the signing ceremony for the 12-month feasibility study contract that the study, to be carried out by the International Consultants and Technocrats Pvt Limited, in collaboration with Apex Engineering Company Limited, includes almost all main roads to and from Zanzibar Stone Town.
“The targeted total number of kilometres is about 77.5 kilometres. The current experience of traffics jams in Dar es Salaam and other cities is big lesson to us. As the Zanzibar city grows, we want to avoid such problems.
We hope that the feasibility study will be a success and we hope to get donors to support the future project,” said Mr Hamad.
According to the ministry’s Principal Secretary (PS) of the ministry, Mr Vuai Iddi Lila, the feasibility study would involve detailed engineering design, Environment Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment and preparation of tender documents before soliciting funds for the very important project in economical development of Zanzibar.
Both the minister and PS thanked the World Bank in supporting various development projects in Zanzibar, including airport development and transport master plan of the Zanzibar town.
The Country Manager for International Consultants and Technocrats Pvt Limited, Mr Vinod Mishra, and Mr Richard Peter Mushi, the Managing Consultant, Apex Engineering Company Limited, Mr Richard Peter Mushi, promised to work and produce their report within the specified period of time set for the feasibility study.
