From Fadhili Abdallah,Kigoma,
CHADEMA DEPUTY Secretary-General Zitto Kabwe appeared before the Kigoma Resident Magistrate’s Court here on Friday charged with aiding a suspect from escaping from police custody.
He is alleged to have assisted Peter Kibwega, a member of the opposition party, to escape when he was being held by the police in connection with breach of peace at a public rally during elections campaign in October this year.
Zitto, who is also a Member of Parliament for Kigoma North Constituency, denied the charge before Magistrates in Charge Emanuel Mrangu and was granted bail until February 10, next year, when the case will be mentioned.
Long adjournment of the case was due to a request by Zitto for the court to give him enough time to attend parliamentary committee meetings.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amon Mimata told the court that investigations into the matter were incomplete. He claimed that the MP committed the offence on October 27, this year, at around 11.00am at Mahembe Police Station in Kigoma District Council.
The lawmaker, according to the prosecutor, allegedly aided the suspect to escape while knowing that such act was an offence punishable in law.
It is alleged on the day that while Kibwega was at the police station for questioning, Zitto went there and forced his way into the station and took him by force and efforts by some policemen on duty to contain the situation failed.
